In a perfect world, a homeowner could time the selling of their home so perfectly that he could buy their new home on the same day, eliminating the need for temporary housing. But with loan requirements and moving timelines, there are many occasions when temporary housing options have to be considered.
How do you avoid homelessness between the time that your house sells and you can move into your new one? If possible, your Real Estate Agent can help negotiate a longer possession period from the new owners for a specific amount of time. If that isn’t a possibility, the following housing options can help you find your temporary home!
Corporate Housing or Short-Term Rentals
‘Corporate Housing’ is a term that is primarily used in the business travel industry, but it is also available to private people who need temporary housing. Corporate housing providers rent out temporary dwellings to individuals or families. Renters may choose to live in an apartment or to rent a house, condo, or even a loft for a short time. These can be available furnished or unfurnished. Short-term rentals usually require a contract, and different companies offer different terms depending on the length of stay.
Extended Stay Hotels
Extended stay hotels offer a great short-term option between homes. Discounted weekly rates may be offered depending upon how long you stay, the size of your room, and location. Many extended stay hotels offer kitchenettes and have laundry facilities on-site for your convenience. As with most hotels, housekeeping and linens are usually included as part of an extended stay hotel’s limited amenities, but amenities vary from hotel to hotel.
Hotels
Hotels, which are not extended stay, are good for anyone who needs temporary housing for just a few days, perhaps a week. You can stay as long as you want, but the price isn’t usually discounted for longer stays. This makes the price per week more prohibitive, and more amenities like kitchen space or laundry can increase costs.
Airbnb
You could find a place to rent short-term by visiting the online community marketplace, Airbnb. People who wish to rent their homes, or a space in their home, are connected with folks who are searching for accommodations. Airbnb has locations in 190 countries around the world, and 34,000 cities. If available in your area, Airbnb can be a cheaper alternative to hotels.
